THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND STRESS RESPONSE IN AFRICAN CATFISH HOUSED INDIVIDUALLY AND IN GROUP

It has been suggested that fish with a lower stress response may be at an advantage compared to fish with a higher stress response (Pottinger and Pickering, 1997). However, the enhanced ability to respond to stress may also be an advantage compared tothe performance of fish with a lowered magnitude of stress response (Fevolden et al, 2002). The aim of this study is to investigate 1) the relationship between growth performance and the stress response in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus housed individually and 2) if this relationship is maintained under group housing.
