DOUBLE DUTY: RED SEAWEED WITH STRONG NATURAL ANTIBIOTIC PROPERTIES YIELDS A VALUABLE PRODUCT AND FUNCTIONS AS BIOFILTER FOR MARICULTURE EFFLUENT

摘要

The Marine Plant Ecology Research Group of CCMAR in southern Portugal develops effluent integrated seaweed production systems. One new, successfully cultivated order is Bonnemaisoniales, including Asparagopsis armata's tetrasporophyte (also referred to as Falkenbergia rufolanosa). The plants produce high levels of bioactive compounds, which serve as chemical defence. These compounds can be extracted and used as natural antibiotics e.g. as ingredients for cosmetics. Our presentation concentrates on the effects of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) flux and water exchange on seaweed production and touches on future research.
