Linking PSTN to IP Networks- The Softswitch Signaling Gateway

Voice over Packet is the next Generation Network and continues to draw focus because of the added benefits it provides over legacy PSTN such as carrying calls with less bandwidth, integrating voice with data and video, and using the low cost Internet infrastructure. However there is a growing concern of how to interface this new Packet technology with the popular Signaling System 7 that is the backbone of our existing telephony system. This paper describes the Softswitch and the interface between the Signaling Gateway and Media Gateway Controller (which has not been standardized yet) [1]. It proposes a mechanism by which SS7 messages can be mapped to IP Megaco messages with the help of call flows, header mappings and state machines.
