Synthesis rate of glutenin proteins in developing hexaploid and tetraploid Mexican wheats

One of the main problems in the large agricultural area of northwest Mico is the lack of a diversity of wheat cultivars for industrial use. For many years, farmers have cultivated the same wheat varieties at different locations with a range of environmental conditions. This study was carried out to evaluate the ability of several wheat varieties to perform in a different climatic area from which they are indigenous. For this purpose, the synthesis rate of glutenin proteins was evaluated during the development of the wheat kernels. Samples of 13 wheat varieties were collected from different agricultural areas and cultivated in a single location. Wheat varieties differing in HMW-GS composition were selected to monitor total protein and unextractable polymeric protein synthesis. Kernels were collected every three days between 7 and 40 days after anthesis and their protein analyzed by SE-HPLC. No differences in total protein were observed amongst all hexaploid and tetraploid wheat cultivars (P < 0.05).However, clear differences were observed in the synthesis rate of unextractable polymeric protein between hexaploids and tetraploid wheats. It was observed that some wheat varieties accumulated more unextractable polymeric protein in the new location. These results may be used to identify the best sites to cultivate a given wheat variety.
