The deformation of spherical particles under an external force has received much attention because microspheres are found ubiquitously in the food, pharmaceutical, coating, and chemical industries as well as in the natural world. For example, latexes of polymer microspheres have been widely used as surface coatings. Experimental studies and theoretical analysis of film formation and deformation behavior of such microspheres over a wide range of environmental conditions have been reported. The growing applications of micro- or submicro-meter polymer particles to various industrial processes asks us to measure the mechanical properties of spheres on a much smaller scale, i.e. at the nanometer level.
