Nanowires and nanotubes are now being intensively studied in manylaboratories.Because it is possible to control nucleation and growth onthe nanoscale, both semiconducting and metallic nanowires can bereadily grown as single crystals.A variety of core-shell and segmentednanowire structures have been made both by vapor phase techniques, such as vapor-liquid-solid growth [1],and by low temperature templatereplication [2].The high aspect ratio, high crystal quality, and structuralversatility of nanowires make them particularly interesting for potentialapplications in electronics and chemical sensing.
