Suitability of new cucumber F_1 hybrids for open-field cultivation

Four newly developed F, cucumber hybrids bred at the Research Institute of Vegetable Crops at Skierniewice (Poland) were the objects of comparative investigations with the earlier released 'Aladyn F_1' and 'Sremski F_1'. The experiments were conductedduring 2002 and 2003 in the open field in order to evaluate suitability for cultivation. Results revealed that 'Odys F_1', 'Reja F_1' and 'Hermes F_1' can be grown for pickling as dill cucumbers, while 'Rodos F_1' is also recommended for gherkin production. These hybrids are gynoecious with multiple resistance to diseases: downy mildew, scab, cucumber mosaic virus, powdery mildew, anthracnose, and angular leaf spot. 'Rodos F_1' had the highest level of resistance to downy mildew among all hybrids tested, including the resistant control, 'Aladyn F_1'.
