Terpenes are one of the largest groups of natural products comprising more than 30,000 reported compounds occurring in animals, plants, fungi and bacteria where they serve a wide range of biological functions. Despite the structural variability all terpenes arederived from just two precursors, namely isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). Studies by Bloch, Cornforth, Popjak and Lynen showed that IPP and DMAPP are derived from acetyl-CoA via 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA and mevalonate in animal cells, yeast, and certain bacteria.
