Usefulness of Laboratory Tests in Diagnosis of Progressive Hearing Loss and Sudden Deafness

The aim of our study was to evaluate an incidence of changes in non-specific immunological tests in patients with progressive or sudden hearing loss in order to determine their usefulness in diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. Twenty patients were included in a study in whom the following tests were performed: immunoglobulin serum level, cryoglobulins, complement system C3, C4, C-reactive protein (CRP), erytrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), additionally: rheumatoid factor, autoantibodies ANA and ANCA, circulating immune complexes, migration inhibition test and subpopulation of lymphocytes. A comparison of mean value for each test with a mean value within normal range showed significant difference for complement (p<0,001), immunological complexes (p<0,05) and CD8+ (P<0,05), CD 56+ (p=0,01). In patients with sensorineural hearing loss changes were observed in parameters of some non specific immunological tests (complement C3, C4, circulating immune complexes) and disturbances in lymphocytes subpopulation.
