In the last years, a trend to vehicle and fleet monitoring is clearly seen. For commercial vehicles the so called telematic monitoring of several components has made a broad entrance. This monitoring mainly focuses on the state of maintenance for several critical components, such as: oil level, oil condition, state of brake pads, air filter condition, and so on. The clutch is often needlessly replaced, because the state of wear of the clutch is not, or just imprecisely measurable. This is causing the vehicle owner unnecessary costs. ZF Sachs AG succeeded in developing a cost effective and robust system which is able to estimate the remaining lifetime of the clutch. This system measures the wear of the facings very precisely and reliable. It provides the display system or the telematic system with the necessary digital information, so that the information of clutch wear can be monitored. It is easy to adapt the system both for passenger car clutches, as for clutches for commercial vehicles. Combined with other vehicle information, this tool provides the clutch developer with new cognitions about the wear mechanism of clutch facings under normal wear conditions, and allows ZF Sachs AG, to offer optimised facing qualities for different load conditions.
