In the field of optical measurement processes, we will present a fully automatic 3-D measuring system for shape capturing. The system consists of a fringe projection sensor mounted on an industrial robot. DaimlerChrysler Research has been using a measuring robot of this type in the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center at Sindelfingen since mid-2002. The 3-D sensor that is used is a development of DaimlerChrysler Research and meanwhile commercialized. Although using photogrammetric methods, a high measurement accuracy is achieved, which is even higher than the accuracy of the standard industrial robot. This provides an appropriate measurement technology for the reverse-engineering process chain.
