Multifunctional composites are becoming increasingly important for industrial applications and are also a challenge to produce. Especially the combination of metal and ceramic requires a complex and elaborate process technology. From the choice of materials through the manufacturing technology and up to the heat treatment, many parameters have to be observed and the production conditions adjusted. A co-manufacturing with a common heat-treatment can be converted by the efficient process technology of tape casting and by combining suitable materials. Therefore it is also necessary to select materials having similar properties and adapt to each other through a variety of processing mechanisms. The aim is to use the standard powder processing for ceramics and the powder metallurgy process route, which is already used for metal-ceramic composites, in order to develop products that bring their respective positive properties for optimizing the composite. Combining these different materials contains the possibility to create new innovative composite properties, such as wear-resistance and also ductility, electrical conductivity and insulation or density and porosity. The resulting products can be used for multiple applications. In addition to finely graded composite filter media this combination is also of large interest for the tool construction. The electrical characteristics are preferred for chip and lighting industry and they are of importance for the production of bipolar surgical instruments in medical technique.
