Possible future herbicide options in green beans, Phaseolus vulgaris

Four field experiments were carried out over two years to investigate the potential of chlorthal dimethyl and propachlor, alone and in mixtures, linuron and pendimethalin to provide an effective alternative to fomesafen for weed control in green beans. The most promising treatments were propachlor (9 litres/ha) with chlorthal dimethyl (6 litres/ha), and a pre-formulated propachlor/chlorthal dimethyl product (20 litres/ha). Linuron gave reasonable control of most weed species present although Chenopodium album control appeared variable between the two years. Pendimethalin was effective but crop phytotoxicity levels were unacceptable at one site in one year.
