In the present study, weed control in glufosinate-resistant maize and rape was comparable to that in conventional crops but was associated with fewer biological risks. New weeds emerged after glufosinate treatment. These plants increased the in-fieldbiodiversity during vegetation but deposited their seeds in the soil, which can lead to later weed control problems. In maize, dead floral mulch and new weeds that emerged after treatment provided only a small degree of protection against soil erosion. Out-crossing of transgenic rape into neighbouring non-transgenic rape was far below the proposed thresholds of 0.5 % and 0.9 %. We believe that conservation tillage systems with herbicide-resistant crops have a greater potential in promoting integrated pest management than same systems that do not use transgenic herbicide-resistant varieties.
