Low molecular weight alpha-(primary hydroxyl)-omega-(tert,chloride)-plyisobutylenes (PIBs,M_n approx 4000-6000 g/mol) were synthesized by living carbocationic polymerization at -60 degC via direct initiation using the alpha-methylstyrene (MSE)/TiCl_4 system.~1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy revealed that these PIBs carried one primary hydroxyl functionality per chain.The PIBs were reactivated by TiCl_4 as a Lewis acid in hexane/CH_3Cl 60/40 v/v solvent mixture at -80 degC,and coupled using a novel commercially available proprietary coupling agent.
