The BREMORTEST:- 1. Is based on accepted principles 2. Is a simple procedure which may be easily learnt 3. Is a rapid procedure - circa 2 minutes per single determination 4. Uses widely available, non-specialised equipment and is of modest cost 5. Gives an on-the-spot value provided a suitable calibration curve is available 6. Is suitable for fresh mortar from containers, spot boards or sampled from joints 7. Can cope with a range of common binder types, lime plasticisers, shell in sea-dredged sands etc. provided calibration data is available or corrections are applied. 8. Can be used for uncarbonated set mortars (probably < 10 days old) if ground up and dispersed but special calibration required 9. Is not suitable as a retro test because of the carbonation problem and uncertainty about original ingredients.
