Based on the slag entrapment defects of medium carbon alloy steel HP295 steel plates, the SEM results showed that the defects containing F, Na elements, which are similar to the compositions of mold flux. The original composition of mold flux was optimized, the melting temperature was adjusted from 1131°C to 1028°C and melting time decreased from 77s to 50.9s. The adjusted and original mold flux are compared on the two strands slab caster, it found that the incidence rate of slag entrapment defects of medium carbon alloy steel HP295 steel plates decreased from 45.4% to 11.1%, the effects of the adjusted mold flux are significant.
