A secondary steelmaking kinetic model for the CAS-OB process has been developed by the Materials Processing Institute and Tata Steel. A multi-component coupled reaction approach was used to calculate the evolution of steel and slag chemistries, steel temperature, slag viscosity and melting temperature as well as the composition, size and population of non-metallic inclusions during treatment. Thermodynamic data were used to model the chemical equilibrium at the slag and steel interface. Alloy additions and aluminium-oxygen reheating were included in steel temperature predictions, with estimation of the slag melting temperature established from the thermodynamic software MTDATA. Characterization of the non-metallic inclusions was determined from both thermodynamic analyses and SEM analyses of steel samples. Validation using operating data and samples generated from the CAS-OB process confirm that these predictions agree well with the plant data. This model will be an important process optimization tool in terms of efficiency and quality.
