A NEW BENCH SCALE TEST FOR DETERMINING ENERGY REQUIREMENT OF AN HPGR

Currently sizing and selection of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) for a particular application requires pilot scale testing, which uses a few tonnes of sample. For most mining projects in their development stage and existing mining operations, the amount of sample required is quite prohibitive and often something that developers and operations simply cannot provide. The NBK Mining Institute at the University of British Columbia (UBC) has developed a bench scale piston press test that requires only 3 kg of sample, approximately a 100th of the amount required for pilot testing, and yet provides results that are within ±15% of the results obtained from pilot scale HPGR test work. Two different approaches have been taken; the first approach involves pilot scale testing on composite feed material to calibrate the piston-die press test on -12.5mm feed, the other more mechanistic approach doesn't require pilot scale test and only requires piston-die press tests on 5 mono size particles at 3 energy levels (pressure) each. These bench scale test procedures are suitable for testing range of ore variability in pre-feasibility and feasibility level study.
