Optimisation of a full-scale activated sludge aeration process

A optimisation procedure for determining the better set point values (SP) of a multipoint on/off aeration controller has been developed and tested in the biological reactor (oxidation ditch) of a full-scale wastewater treatment facility. This procedure performs a study of the system with a simulation software and obtains the set of SP values using the Rosenbrock mathematical algorithm. The performance of the regulator with the optimised set of SP was compared with that obtained with a set of arbitrary values. A more stable system by about 30% (decrease of the start and stop operations, assuring thus, a longer life of the compressors) and energy savings about 17% are observed.
