The process for aeration of the waste water/activated sludge mixture is characterised in that a waste water flow (a, d) is produced by forced circulation in countercurrent to the upwardly directed waste water-air flow (b, e), effected by an aeration apparatus (19), in the waste water/activated sludge mixture to prolong the contact time between air and waste water. The depths of submersion of the aeration apparatus (19) can be controlled in dependence on the actual oxygen demand. Rectangular, round and annular activation tanks can be equipped with the aeration system. IMAGE
