Marine pollution seems to be a very important matter not only on a national but on an international basis. Sea pollution related studies started as a result of the London Convention in 1954. A diesel engine is designed to burn diesel fuel producing carbondioxide (CO_2), a major atmospheric pollutant. Oxygen (O_2) is necessary for combustion of all types of fuels and internal combustion engines which work with an advanced technology. O_2 consumption calculation for ships should be made by shipowners as well as systematic checking of O_2 production. It is presented the case of the Turkish Merchant Marine Fleet, the 20th largest fleet of the world with its amount of CO_2 produced of about 5.820.000 t/year and O_2 requirement of approximately 31.737.480 t/year.
