There is substantial potential for very small-scale hydro systems (below 5kW) to supply the basic electricity and motive power requirements of hamlets and small villages in many parts of the developing world. However, if the same approaches used for larger hydro schemes are applied, the schemes are not cost-effective. This paper presents new approaches to the design and implementation of what are often called pico hydro schemes, drawing upon examples from Africa and Asia. The paper also presents critical factors for the long-term Sustainability of pico hydro projects and programmes.
