THE BARROW SHIPLIFT: 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE OF MOVING NUCLEAR SUBMARINES

The paper describes the shiplift and transfer systems at the BAE SYSTEMS SUBMARINES yard at Barrow-in-Furness, and their use over the past 15 years. It describes the construction and commissioning of the shiplift and transfer system, taking cognisance of the limitations and rules applied to a shiplift authorised for lifting nuclear submarines. Regulatory requirements have driven continuous improvement. This paper describes some that have come about due to the evolving requirements of the nuclear site safety case, and lessons learnt from experience of operation over the past 15 years. The paper also describes the increasing level of sophisticated and detailed fault and structural analysis undertaken to support the nuclear safety case.
