Chitosan (CS) and polyaspartic acid (PAspNa) bilayer and trilayer films have been fabricated. CS and PAspNa form a polyelectrolyte complex, which potentially can be an artificial substitute for the extracellular matrix (ECM). The layered film exhibited distinct physical properties from the pure CS film as well as the film morphology observed by SEM and AFM. The swelling ratio was suppressed and the tensile strength was significantly improved for the layered films at various pH, due to the complex formation. The layered films significantly promoted blood coagulation, confirmed by a blood sedimentation test.
