A whole-cell toxicity biosensor based on Anabaena flos-aquae for the determination of heavy metals was developed. Immobilized of Anabaena flos-aquae in a poly (2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) membrane interfaced with an oxygen electrode showed immediate response (within minutes) to toxicity of heavy metals (Cu & Pb). Response was measured in the form of inhibition of photosynthetic activity of the immobilized cyanobacteria through assessment of oxygen concentration changes. The 50% inhibition (IC{sub}50) of 0.4 mg/L and 0.6 mg/L of Cu were recorded for repetitive and single exposure respectively. The IC{sub}50 of Pb were slightly lower 0.3 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L in repetitive and single exposure respectively. The 50% inhibition of Cu and Pb in repetitive exposure and single exposure were significantly different statistically (p<0.05).
