Water Quality Of Achankovil River, Westen Ghats, South India

Water of Achankovil River was sampled for three seasons in 2002 and samples were analysed for major cations and anions. The EC and pH of the water ranges from 24-54 μS/cm and 6.32-7.56 respectively. The river water is dominated by Cl > HCO_3 > HSiO_4 > Na > Ca > K > Mg > SO_4 > PO_4 > F. Bicarbonate and chloride are the dominated anions and sodium and calcium are the dominated cations. The result shows that high dissolved load resulted due to the intensive rock weathering in the drainage area. A marked temporal and spatial variation of solute concentration in river water has been observed and suspended sediment load in the water is positively correlated with solute concentration.
