The numbers game is simply a measure of performance. It is a multi-dimensional concept because key performance indicators change as product passes through the Textile Marketing Chain. They range from the numbers of colours predicted to reach market for the Fashion Forecasters and Trend Services, number of lab-dips required to demonstrate colour achievability for Retailer Colour Development to colour achievability and Right- First Time performance for the Textile Mill. Colours can also be defined by numbers in terms of spectral data or colour difference and can be considered an integral part of the game and they are the link between all the elements of the Textile Marketing Chain. This paper focuses on the common theme of colour communication and achievability throughout the Textile Marketing Chain. Current procedures and protocols are outlined, possible sources of error causing shade drift are identified and the role of “Certified Customised Colour Standards” and spectral data in delivering the concept colour to the store is examined.
