Nuclear material can be characterised by Non-Destructive Assay using methods based on gamma spectroscopy, calorimetry and the neutron correlation technique. A combination of such methods allows for an accurate determination of the isotopic vector and the total Pu-amount, without any prior knowledge of the material under investigation. In addition, impurities creating a source of (α,n) neutrons can be determined. The techniques can also be used to determine the neutron emission rate of ~(252)Cf(s.f.) neutron sources and sources based on the (α,n) reaction. We demonstrate that passive NDA methods are very useful for the identification and quantification of illicit material.
