The invention relates to means for characterising the creep and growth deformation of structural members to be used in an environment that may induce growth and creep deformations in at least one axial direction (X), in particular in nuclear plants, said characterisation member being a monolithic member and comprising a tubular body (2) provided at each end with a head (4, 6) in the shape of a solid crown, a middle portion (8) between both heads (6, 8) including recesses (12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4) extending substantially axially, separated by at least two bearing legs (14.1, 14.2) extending substantially axially and connecting the two heads and second non-bearing legs (16.1, 16.2) extending substantially axially and connected to only one of said two heads (4, 6). The present invention also relates to a characterisation method for implementing said means.
