The wind turbine standard IEC 61400-1 allows any method for stochastic wind field generation, as long as certain requirements for the wind frequency spectrum and the spatial coherence functions are satisfied. The aim of this research is to determine whether a 'more physically correct' stochastic wind field is to be preferred over a simpler 'less physically correct' wind field for wind turbine fatigue load calculations. Three wind field generation methods are investigated: the Sandia-Veers method (with u, v, w, uncorrelated), the Sandia-Veers method with Solari-Tubino modification (u, w correlated) and the Mann method (a spectral tensor method that generates a consistent spatial structure). It turns out that the differences between the two Sandia-Veers methods is negligible, while the Mann method produces essentially different loads.
