This paper describes a project to (i) implement on a trial basis and (ii) evaluate the performance of, the Prediktor wind power forecasting system for a selection of wind farms in Ireland. The need for a wind power forecasting system in the context of the planned increased penetration of wind power into the Irish electricity supply system is identified. The main features of the Prediktor wind power forecasting system, which is based largely on physical modeling techniques, are briefly outlined. The trial implementation of Prediktor applied to 15 Irish wind farms is described. The performance of Prediktor is then evaluated using a simple persistence forecast as a benchmark. This is done for both individual wind farms and for aggregated geographic groupings of wind farms. Conclusions are drawn and areas for further work are identified.
