Closed Congolian forest covers 22 million ha, or two-thirds of the Congo, and is its second resource in economic terms, after petroleum. Since 1974, the country has followed a policy of sustainable management of its forests, adopting a forest management and harvesting approach based on large-scale concessions with 30- to 40-year rotations, thereby ensuring sustained production of timber. After noting the handicaps and weaknesses of the forest sector, the government laid down new guidelines for the rational management of forests and wildlife with a view to deriving greater benefit for present and future generations.
