The author maintains that many engineers need better training in pipe renewal design and practice. Training and experience are particularly critical in any pre-project analysis of fully deteriorated sewers. The practice of classifying sewers into various design states often provides a simple lumping and sorting routine that engineers and contractors rely upon to specify renewal designs and techniques. This operation can provide simple, easy-to-understand, wrong answers to complex problems. The author uses the example of a large-diameter interceptor sewer where the application of design theory and practice collided.
