The reality of renewal design for fully deteriorated sewers is often complex and challenging. This complexity is frequently not properly accommodated in design standards or project specifications. The author maintains that many engineers need better training in pipe renewal design and practice. Training and experience are particularly critical in any pre-project analysis of fully deteriorated sewers. The practice of classifying sewers into various design states often provides a simple lumping and sorting routine that engineers and contractors rely upon to specify renewal designs and techniques. This operation can provide simple, easy-to-understand, wrong answers to complex problems. The author uses the example of a large-diameter interceptor sewer where the application of design theory and practice collided.
