摘要

The report gives a survey of the literature on degradation of sewer pipes. One particular mechanism of degradation of concrete sewer pipes dominates the literature. It is known as Biogenic Sulfuric acid Attack (BSA). It can be summarized as follows. Under anaerobic conditions sulfate in the sewage is reduced to sulfide by the action of bacteriae. The mechanism of BSA has been thoroughly investigated, resulting in several equations to predict the occurrence of attack and its rate. Calculations involve various combinations of: dimensions of the pipeline, oxygen content and demand of the sewage, temperature, sewage flow and alkali content of the concrete. The various chemical methods of reducing sulfide build up are judged very differently in literature (especially with respect to costs).
