The Demolition and Site Clearance Phases of the 4.5-acre, USD470,000, Princess Anne Athletic Center Project included the demolition of the 25,000 square feet old factory building - the roof, ceiling, walls, and concrete floor slabs, the dismantling and removal of 29 large steel and 2 fiber glass vertical and horizontal storage tanks, their support structures and concrete foundations with all related fixtures, heavy brush and undergrowth and all other mounted structures and sheds and the disposal of all items in appropriate landfills and recycling centers. This project is funded by the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) -US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The work in this phase included the preparation of a Request for Proposal which was used to prepare a bid package that was processed through the Maryland Contract System. This culminated in the award of a contract to a local demolition company. Over 300 tons of scrap metal were removed from the site for recycling. Environmental issues of soil contamination and a 1000-gallon tank full of heating oil buried under the factory's concrete floor slab were addressed and students and faculty of the Construction Management Technology Program were involved in several aspects of this phase of the project. The local community was also involved in this project; several meetings were held by the Project Management and Evaluation Committee and a community activity was held on the project site to heighten awareness and encourage community involvement in the planning of the project. Challenges, successes, related issues of executing the project and a brief description of the work being done in the Site Planning and Development Phase are highlighted in this paper.
