1. Local Biomass Processing Depot (“Depot”) is a facility that first pretreats cellulosic feedstocks and then densifies (pelletizes) the pretreated feedstocks. 2. The pretreatment process is geographically isolated from the biorefinery and is located near feedstock production areas. 3. Depot size is less than 200 tons per day. 4. Pretreated pellets are transported to a biorefinery by truck or railroad 4.1 reducing logistics costs compared to the centralized system. 4.2 bulky baled feedstock in the centralized system versus densified pellets in the depot system 5. Multiple small depots in the local network system supply feedstock to a large biorefinery (≥ 15,000 tons/day) 6. Ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX~(TM)) pretreated pellet can be also used as feed for ruminant animals, almost equivalent to corn grain in nutrient value.
