Today’s diesel engines are more fuel efficient than gasoline engines, but even so increases in fuel economy are needed. With this in mind and due to increasingly stringent environmental policies on NOX, hydrocarbons (HC), CO, CO2 and particulate matter (PM) emissions from diesel engines, low temperature combustion (LTC) engines have been developed. The emissions from these LTC engines have significantly lower concentrations of emitted NOX (by a factor of 6) and PM (by a factor of 8), however the HC and CO concentrations are much higher, by factors of 20 and 7 respectively. Also the exhaust temperatures are 40-70°C lower. With these changes, significantly more emphasis needs to be put on the activity of the oxidation catalyst function and low temperature NOX reduction performance.
