Currently there is much interest in developing processes for the production of advanced biofuels and chemicals. Unlike conventional petroleum refining, reactions of biosourced molecules are very complex and often difficult to control. For this reason, designing solid catalysts for bio-based processes requires great consideration in order to obtain products in appreciable yields. One such example is the hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation of furfural which is an important chemical intermediate produced from hemicellulose. Possible products from this reaction include 2-methylfuran, which has great potential to be used in gasoline fuel blends, and furan, which has little to no potential to be used in gasoline fuel blends.
