According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program, municipal solid waste landfills are the third largest contributor of human‐ related methane emissions in the United States. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas can be prevented from going into the atmosphere by either flaring or by capturing it and converting it to energy. The second option, known as Landfill Gas to Energy (LFGTE), is preferable because it has the added benefit of offsetting our dependence on non‐renewable fuels. Generation of electricity can be carried out with a number of technologies, internal combustion engines and turbines being the most common.
