A novel approach to the activated carbon preparation from Ukrainian anthracites.

Our recently developed approach to the activated anthracite preparation by the combination of a chemical pre-treatment and a physical activation has been applied to Ukrainian anthracites (Cdaf 92–95%). They have been subjected to the pre-treatment either with HClO4 or with HNO3 vapors under intercalation-like conditions. Chemically pre-treated samples were then subjected to physical (H2O, CO2) activation (850°C). The influence of the pre-treatment conditions has been analyzed by means of XPS, XRD, FTIR, TGA, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and gas adsorption techniques. By the mentioned above approach, the activated carbons with extended surface area in a wide range of porosity have been prepared from Ukrainian anthracites, which are sutable for a liquid phase application.
