In the framework of EU project RIMAP a new European Guideline for optimized risk based maintenance and inspection planning of industrial plants (RBLM -^sRisk Based Life Management) is being developed. Current work (already done) and future, planned work on the new guideline are presented briefly in the first part of the paper. Also presented in the paper are results from the development of detailed guideline for conventional power plants as well as the experience from implementing the results in the pilot power plant in Heilbronn (EnBW). Shortly the following issues are discussed in the paper: (a) identification of critical components, (b) application of a multilevel risk analysis, from "Screening" to "Detailed analysis" (c) determination of probabilities of failure -^sPoF (d) determination of consequence of failure -^sCoF (e) optimization of maintenance and inspection plan. From the application of the methodology the following conclusions can be drawn: RBLM through the application (use) of RIMAP Guideline methodology gives transparency to the decision making process and gives an optimized maintenance policy based on current state of the components, which eventually appears to be more important then the savings themselves.
