Reliability Analysis of Hass Finishing Processes

This research explores the use of reliability functions to evaluate the quality of the output of a mass finishing process. Pre-polished cylindrical metal coupons, made from aluminum, brass, and steel, were processed for two-hour intervals in a centrifugal disk mass finishing machine using two different media compositions. The difference in surface finish (Δ_(sf)), between the fresh and processed coupons for each coupon material in each time block, was the random variable used for generating the reliability analysis. Using a cut-off value for surface finish, the number of failures was determined for each batch of coupons that were processed by each type of media. Associated reliability relationships were generated and analyzed. The conclusion was that reliability functions are viable tools for assessing the quality of the output from a mass finishing process.
