Any fluctuation in environmental temperature will introduce internal thermal stresses in metal matrix composites due to the large difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between the matrix and ceramic reinforcements. These residual stresses have a substantial effect on their dimensional stability and correspondingly, the CTE. This work presents investigations on the evolution of thermal expansion coefficients during thermal cycling for the short-fiber reinforced AlSi12CuMgNi piston alloy.
