FULLERENE FORMATION IN ARC DISCHARGE

The researches made possible further advance in understanding the fullerene formation and the improvement of a plasma reactor for obtaining the fullerene- containing soot. The characteristics of our reactor, assembled in Saint Petersburg (Russia) are the following: total efficiency is ~ 100 g/h, fullerene content is more than 12% and the self-cost is 0.2 $/g for the soot with taking all expenses. Certainly these parameters are far from ideal ones, but the reactor admits further improvements. Besides this, very prospective are hybrid schemes, "laser+gas discharge" among them. The study was carried out in the framework of the Russian program Fullerenes and Atomic Clusters and supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (Project No. 00-02-16928).
