Fullerenes have a range of interesting and unique properties that make them useful starting points for bioorganic design. These include their complete conformational restriction as well as their ability to vary the separation of surface addends in a comprehensive manner. In addition, there are real challenges in using fullerenes in this realm, specifically their cost and challenging regio-chemistry. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages in many situations, but the greatest advantage in using fullerenes will come from applications that crucially depend on the unique properties that fullerenes bring to the table.
