Many linear one-dimensional systems are largely wavelike, but also exhibit non-wavelike dispersive or dissipative phenomena. Lumped models of these systems are apt to require great complexity, and even then the results of simulations typically include spurious oscillations associated with repeated pairs of inertances and compliances. A "quasi method of characteristics" was proposed by the author many years ago to address such situations. In the present paper, a bond graph notation for these hybrid pure-delay/lumped models is proposed, and detailed general equations for simulation are deduced. Application is illustrated for a "linear elastic" model, with favorable comparison to a lumped-model alternative. Application is also given to the viscous flow of a liquid in a tube with a nonlinear boundary condition.
