INFORMATION FUSION IN THE HUMAN BRAIN

There is growing interest in the defense sensing community with regard to higher neurocognitive function, including issues of information flow and potential information fusion processes in the brain. In particular, models of higher functional-organizational brain activity may be useful comparative paradigms in neural-biomimetic robotic systems development and in multi-sensor systems design. Methods for understanding neural processing and possible fusion of multi-modal sensory imagery is highly relevant for colleagues in the defense sector concerned with innovations in visual neuromorphic robotics, 3D stereospatial neural network architectures, particularly for high-throughput, automated, analysis of satellite imagery. Finally, the area of biomimetics and neurobiomimetics has received considerable attention in recent years. Although most work is centered on emulation of insect based neural systems, there is gradually evolving interest in mimicry of mammalian neural processing paradigms, in particular for the purposes of exploring new approaches toward the design of workable quantum computing models. This direction is prompting renewed interest in the question of how the human brain: 1) regulates afferent information flow, 2) fuses data and imagery, and how it 3) processes and manages the complexity of multi-dimensional information transfer and utilization, particularly at higher infrastructural and organizational levels of neural function.
