Data Fusion (DF) technology is young, although some of its elements were developed in the early 1960s. In the early 1980s, the U.S. military services began extensive research activities in this domain to automate and enhance the information processing capabilities of various systems. To ensure synergy between various research activities within the Department of Defence (DoD), the Joint Directors of the U.S. DoD Laboratories (JDL) convened a DF subpanel which started to meet in 1984. The subpanel observed that it was necessary to provide a common frame of reference to the wide variety of researchers who did not have a uniform view/definition of the DF process and scope. The subpanel concluded that DF is a discipline in its own right and developed a DF model, as well as a corresponding taxonomy and lexicon. Figure 1 depicts the JDL DF Subpanel Definition of DF.
