Sonar data association is a difficult task to automate because of large volumes of uncertain, ambiguous data and a complex acoustic environment. The blackboard architecture, through its flexible, adaptive control structure, its ability to incorporate diverse sources of information, and its modular design, is well-suited to the implementation of solutions to the sonar data association problem which emulate the capabilities of the human sonar operator. Work in this area being conducted at DREA provides a foundation for the development of operator aids for USW tactical picture compilation.
